Surgery to Move Jaws Improves Outcomes in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients

One of the most prominent sleep specialists in the world has stated that obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, would not exist if our jaws grew forward properly as they did in our ancestors. Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery to advance the jaws and bring both the soft palate and base of the tongue forward makes total sense in this light.

There are no promises of results with any treatment involving human beings. Having said that, if patients are properly prepared orthodontically for MMA surgery and the surgery is done by a highly trained surgeon who understands the most important goal is optimization of the airway, outcomes can be excellent.
